Orienteering Life:                                                                                                                                   Orienteering requires navigational skills, using a map and compass to navigate. That’s the easy part, the challenging part is dealing with the terrain, weather and unexpected challenges. So, with the Bible as our map, and the Holy Spirit as our compass, we set off in our world focused on arriving at our destination, the kingdom of God. But between where we are and our goal, the landscape of life and the unexpected can challenge our resolve and our abilities to cope.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  w

163rd Anniversary:                                                                                                                                   Durham Presbyterian Church has had the privilidge to minister in the town of Durham for 163 years. As we celebrate this anniversary, I pray that we will take the time to not only look back at where we came from, but look forward to where we are going. The ministry that God has given us hasn’t stopped, it is growing and we have the responsibility to pass our faith on to The Next Generation.                                                                                                 J

Adventure Twenty 18:                                                                                                                                In Tolkien’s book “The Hobbit”, Gandalf the wizard is speaking to Bilbo the Hobbit and he says … “I am looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it's very difficult to find anyone.” Bilbo replies “I should think so — in these parts! We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner!” In a way, I agree with Bilbo, no one wants to be late for dinner; but what a great description of people in general, and the church in particular. Very few  if anyone, likes change, and when we set out on an adventure, the unwritten rule is that things (life), will change. This month, we're looking at the Adventure that is in store for us in Twenty 18.

Preparing For The Journey:                                                                                          I don’t know what kind of a packer you are, some people start packing weeks before they leave, while others throw things in their suitcase as they’re running out the door. Maybe you like to take everything with you, including the kitchen sink … because your suitcase has wheels on it. Or maybe you’re a minimalist only taking the essentials everything you need for a month fits in a small carry on.                                                                                     Life is a lot like a journey, and like any trip, we have bags that we carry around with us. Every day we’re stuffing things into our bag like memories, good or bad, fears, pain, and brokenness. All too often, the weight of those bags weigh us down on our journey.                                                                                                                        Jesus invites us to join Him, and recover our life.
